80,000-liter underground tanks at Schiphol

TAB De Blesse was commissioned to supply two double-walled underground storage tanks, each with a capacity of 80,000 liters, for a new gas station near Hoofddorp, close to Schiphol. The tanks are KIWA-certified and feature multiple compartments.

A gas station at this location handles large volumes daily and must be able to offer multiple fuels simultaneously. By dividing the tanks into compartments, a single tank can store different products separately—for example, various types of gasoline and diesel—while requiring only two underground tanks. This saves space on the property and keeps the installation organized. The layout of the compartments is tailored to the expected demand for each product, allowing the operator to manage inventory efficiently.

Both tanks are double-walled. The space between the inner and outer walls is monitored by a leak detection system, ensuring that any leak is detected immediately before anything enters the soil. At a gas station—especially one with such heavy traffic and located so close to the airport—this is not a luxury but a necessity. The tanks were constructed and inspected in accordance with Kiwa BRL-K21051, the Dutch assessment guideline for steel underground storage tanks, ensuring that the installation meets the requirements set by the government and the insurer for underground fuel storage.

Tanks of this size—80,000 liters each—are built entirely at our own factory in De Blesse, from welding the tank body to coating and inspection, and are then transported as a single unit to the site. At the construction site, they are hoisted into the tank pit and connected to the gas station’s system.
